Through the dam into troubled waters: Combined effects of stream fragmentation, habitat deterioration, and poor water quality on lowland stream fish distribution

چکیده
This study aimed to distinguish the contribution of stream fragmentation and poor habitat water quality decline in riverine fish species. The species presence was related number barriers between a specific lowland section main river length remaining two barriers. To investigate relationship absence ecological quality, EQR velocity indices were compared accessible sites where either present or absent. 79% 1039 km disconnected from Meuse by one more 34% than 5 barriers, while 28% all sections shorter 2.5 km. Only 2% scored very good characterized (very) slow flowing waters (

Stream fish, water and habitat quality in a pasture dominated basin, southeastern Brazil.
A fish survey in 35 stream reaches (from 1st to 3rd order) with physicochemical and habitat assessment in the São José dos Dourados system, southeastern Brazil, was conducted. Most of the basin land cover (77.4%) is used for pasture. From the sampled stream reaches, 24 were of good physicochemical quality, 10 of fair quality, and only one of poor quality. A habitat assessment showed that 10 str...
متن کاملEffects of Small Dams on Cold Water Stream Fish Communities
—Dams provide many benefits to society, yet they have profound impacts on aquatic ecosystems. In addition to blocking fish migration, small surface-release dams on coldwater streams generally increase water temperature below the dam. The goal of this study was to evaluate how small, surface-release dams affect fish communities, separating the total effect into components related to fragmentatio...
متن کاملInfluence of Stream channel morphology and in-stream habitats on fish community in Golestan province Streams
Four streams with different sizes were selected for studying the effects of environmental factors on fish assemblages using indirect (Detrended Correspondence Analysis, DCA) and direct (Redundancy Analysis, RDA) gradient analysis in Golestan province. DCA of presence-absence and relative abundance data showed well gradient and linear model of species variability. In the within-site RDA, environ...
متن کاملPopulation size, habitat fragmentation, and the nature of adaptive variation in a stream fish.
Whether and how habitat fragmentation and population size jointly affect adaptive genetic variation and adaptive population differentiation are largely unexplored. Owing to pronounced genetic drift, small, fragmented populations are thought to exhibit reduced adaptive genetic variation relative to large populations. Yet fragmentation is known to increase variability within and among habitats as...
